Why Kiko is My 2nd Favorite Character (DTB Season 2 Episode 9)
My favorite is Yin, duh!! (I hope you knew that)
This might be my favorite episode of the second season so far. It was gag ridden and a little bit too distracted, but once it let me borrow the red thread it pulled me along quite nicely. Though this had allusions to the overall story and some big reveals, my favorite set of sequences dealt with the way they drew the parallel between Suou and Mina:
The message isn’t particularly profound and at first I thought they were once again distinguishing between Suou and the contractors, but then:
and a nice sum up by Kiko
made me conclude that this wasn’t a division between Suou and the regular contractors at all which is another chink in the completely logical contractor’s armor (as far as I’m concerned).
I also just flat out love Kiko’s self references. Like I said when I found out she was going to appear this episode “She’s broken the fourth wall and refuses to rebuild it”.
The message “We all love our mothers” probably isn’t going to be the deciding factor in the Izanami X Izanagi plot resolution. I do think that these moments bring back the humanity this world is sometimes lacking. Suou just wants to be wanted by her mother. She almost gets it too. Overall this will most likely be the last reprieve our characters get before the final escalation to the climax. The episode therefore is meant to fill those little character holes before we tear them apart in the final sequences.
The last time I saw a character make eyes like that was right before they Higurashied a whole bunch of people. Run for cover Suou, and stay away from the girl licking blood and wielding a machete.
In summary I like how they used separate stories to help explain both characters and they did it quite well this episode. I wish the whole thing hadn’t felt so rushed, but whatever…
Other Thoughts:

EPIC POSE!

Kiko is an idiot Savant who often says things that are true. I actually would put forth that she is a contractor who just knows everything!

Um, I’m pretty sure this is a lie… She’s a liar!

Do I even need to say anything. Hei was wiping out contractors in South America with pure bad assness alone. Powers are not an issue.

Did someone put a big sign on Misaki’s back. If so it reads “I’m stalking in love with BK201, ask me about it”. She is just getting owned by everyone.

Loved that her first reservation was Suou’s Loli issue > crime. I think something is clearly wrong with the universe when Kiko is the voice of reason. Why the reservation now Kiko? You had no problem capturing Kirsi last season (Though she was looking for Kirsi/Yin).

They are just dangerous. What did they do to July? I see Goth Loli, bunny ears, and a few other forms of moe. July does not look pleased. Kiko looks like she’s about to be arrested.

I think it’s interesting that the moment Misaki actually sees Hei again she refers to him as Li-kun. She really hasn’t been able to stop thinking of him as Li even knowing all the things his counterpart, BK-201, has done.

I love the imagery of the broken mirror. I know it’s over done, but still it shows the many facets of Hei’s personality, how broken Hei is, how unlucky Hei is, or any number of things you want to prescribe to it. Open imagery is the best.
AND FINALLY

And there they go *sniff*. It’s still funny. I love the epic pwnage Kiko deals out to Gui right after he says an epic line. Gui has some of the best lines in the entire show, the one character allowed to tell us how we should view society. Then Bones thrusts in a “Just Kidding”. To me this is some of the best writing. It pretends to have answers but doesn’t take them seriously (or at least not all of the characters do). I think Gui and Kiko are just a wake up call to the absolutist attitude. What a fun episode!
Next Time:
* That looks like a Yin shot to me!
* I’m not talking about the big reveals this week (end of the world, drawn into hells gate, Suou died a long time ago, so on and so forth). Except that the supposed timeline of Suou’s death corresponds interestingly with the meteor shower we saw in the first episode where everyone was knocked unconscious. What’s going on? We’ll find out more soon I assume.
* Reason for the short post with plenty of cop outs: <– I have a lot of homework.
*A gag post for a gag episode. All is right with the world.

This episode was awesome, my favourite this season so far.
Hei is back on form at last, that shave, that haircut, those knives. Hell yeah!
I’m getting really excited about the final episodes now, lets hope this was indicative of whats to come.
Agreed! He doesn’t look like a hobo anymore.
so sad its going to end after 3 episode
call me a psycho but i’ll make the last one lasts forever , i’ll do what i did with deathnote , i’ll never watch the last episode and create my own sequals
now i noticed the title .
Dude how come u love kiko more than Suou ?!?!?!
That’s pretty extreme… I think endings can be as beautiful as the whole series so I’ll definitely watch it. The last episode of Code Geass R2 literally made the series for me. It was so sad.
It’s up to you though, no matter how the last episode goes there will still be characters to create your own sequels with.
Kiko > Suou
I don’t know, I just am not that attached to Suou yet. She’s to wishy washy at the moment. I realize that’s the point, but I’m waiting for the moment of resolution. Kiko also has a lot of awesome moments. She’s a gag character but they use her to show themes in a way none of the contractors can. She’s an extremely unique character for the series.
Plus Katou Emiri is her voice actress (and that’s just win)!
Woot! I finally got to a computer and caught up on my Darker Than Black episodes. I finished Black Lagoon not to long ago and I’m still working on Evangelion. You know this is the second time when a series knocked me for a loop with the whole “You died a long time ago” thing… The first time was when I was watching Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae now it’s DTB? This raises some questions like if Suou really is a boy but is a crossdresser? But then again Brita called Suou a girl so I’m confused… I’m impatient to I want Hei to hurry up and get to Yin! *Sigh* Thusday isn’t soon enough.
Suou is a girl! We know this from when Hei was “feeling her up”. I think the real question is whether or not Suou really died. It’s possible her father just faked her death in an attempt to hide her existence from her mother (especially if she is Izanagi). I’m actually leaning towards a theory that she might be a doll programed by the ME. Remember her father was a chief scientist on the ME network. He might have created Suou, but then again where did he find a body that looked so much like his daughter. It’s impossible to say at this point what exactly is going on, but like you say Thursday can not come soon enough.
Congratulations on getting through Black Lagoon. That’s quite a trip… Evangelion is a lot of fun too, if not a little dated.
I didn’t think about that…
I feel dumb now. Suou being a doll is a really good theory. I think their mother should make another appearance. I wanted a little more development on her charcter. I feel like she should do something more than just run away from her problems. Maybe she could come in and make some sort of self sacrifice to save Suou or Shion or right some wrong. I don’t know. I just think she should have gotten some more development other than being a crazy mother who’s on the run and abandoned her other child. What do you think?
She’s got nice ankles!
On a serious note she understandably doesn’t know what’s going on with Suou. Shion abandoned her all those years ago by staying with her husband so to see Shion come back was a dream come true. Seeing your dead daughter though is another matter entirely. Obviously it was traumatic, but to her it’s much more likely that Suou isn’t her daughter, but some weird creation. She didn’t go back for Shion because she though he had made his choice and she didn’t go back for her husband because he’s crazy.
I don’t think she’s crazy, just consumed with guilt and rage. I doubt we’ve seen the last of her, she’s still a big part of Suou’s life and they left her plot line pretty unresolved. My guess is we’ll figure out what Suou is then reintroduce the loving mother. Either that or just kill of Suou and get none of thee above.
Oh! Damn I can’t believe I didn’t get the fourth wall thing! I even replayed that scene once, trying to pin down a reference to some show. Heck, it was a self-reference, the pain!
And goth-loli usagi-mimi July must be the most ired July I’ve yet seen, in both seasons.
Oh wow, your catching up on your DTB, I’m impressed
.
Don’t worry we all miss it. Not everything can be as obvious as Seitokai no Ichizon’s references (Actually even some of those can be cryptic).
