The Level Upper Arc

The thrilling conclusion to the Level Upper Arc.
I really do appreciate when To Aru Kagaku no Railgun does things right. The yuri was cut down to about only 5% of the show over the last two episodes and we finally concentrate on the tumultuous atmosphere of a purely scientific world.

But let’s get to the important stuff. Misaka is badass.
I loved her calm demeanor as she tore apart the AIM burst. What I love about Misaka and this arc is that her final confrontation isn’t controlled by anger or self righteous indignation. Instead of order online pharm touting a “This is wrong and you’re wrong for doing it” at the AIM burst she looks inward and realizes that she was also partly responsible. However, she doesn’t stop, she does what needs to be done. She doesn’t wallow in self pity she launches the arcade token in a flurry of flashing light to destroy the core and stop the AIM field dead in its tracks.
Kiyama was also an incredibly understandable character in this arc and an extremely unique one for the world. We’re finally given a look at how the process works. We know there are espers on the streets blowing each other up, but what about the scientists who constantly work to improve or control them? We learn it is far from a perfect process, and the light of morality can often stand in the way of scientific inquiry. Of course the author really played us by making them experiment on children. They couldn’t just use angry convicts they had to use cute, well-behaved, lovable kids against us. You win this one Railgun.

More than anything though I’m glad Railgun is a spin-off at all. I like her in To Aru Majutsu, but in the end Touma had to save her twice and her roll was always reduced to one of support. In Railgun we see she isn’t some damsel in distress. Her powers are the real deal and she is every bit the hero Touma is.
I’m not sure what the next two episodes hold, but one looks like fanservice and the next well… This episode was pretty much the conclusion of the series. The next couple of episodes are just the stuff they get to tag onto the end of the story. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just don’t expect to use your brain.

The first and most important thing I would like to say is… that last pic there on your post is made of pure epic win.
I think the next few episodes are going to be filler – then we are going to get the “Sisters” arc. No?
I think there are only 14 episodes. Normally you would be correct judging from the novels but I think they’re actually going back to To Aru Majutsu no Index instead of making Railgun a full 24 episode ordeal.
I’m sad about it too, but maybe we’ll get some Misaka goodness in Majutsu as well. If there are more than 14 episodes it would be good news to me :).
That last picture is epic win!
There are sources which cited that Railgun will be a 2 cours series, so is it safe to assume it will stretch to a minimum of 20 episodes? Possibly to the previous series standard 24 like Index? Unless Episode 14 is considered part of the second cours just because it’s 13 + 1, but it seems kind of trivial.
I’m not too hopeful for a Sisters arc adaptation simply because the manga is still in the middle of the Railgun version of the story and there isn’t enough material to properly stretch the relevant chapters to a full cours. It also doesn’t make much sense for them to pull the same material from the Index version to compensate for the rest, except for the conclusion of the arc maybe.
Oh btw, Episodes 13 and 14 are fillers. 13 – swimsuits; 14 – Saten takes a special training course in a certain high school (this is hinted to be a follow up story to the Level Upper arc).
Is it possible that Railgun is also a light novel? I know that Majutsu is definitely a light novel first and a manga second. I hadn’t heard that there were more than 14 episodes so hearing it now is welcome news. I can’t really imagine them not going to the sisters arc, but then again they put the whole vampire arc in before Sisters in Majutsu. Which was kind of annoying. Thanks for all the info!!
Nice christmas banner! Must not have been easy finding a suitable santa-Yin :P
Can’t say anything on topic unfortunately, in fact I can’t read any of your recent posts cos I’m sooo behind on everything >.<
Oh well, while I'm posting an off-topic comment, might as well take the chance to sulk that the Hei-Yin poll-gap continues to widen..
You’re not the only one sulking. I’m deeply saddened by the poll. Haven’t people noticed the name of the site!?
I actually commissioned the banner from an artist named Telly. I’ve commissioned him before and he always does wonderful stuff. I’m really excited about it. I wanted to make all the other bloggers jealous. Did it work? (Yes, I know I have true Christmas spirit)
Aside: I guess I was wrong about Railgun being a light novel. It is purely a manga spin off. Majutsu is still a light novel though. Maybe they won’t proceed with the sister arc.
Railgun is mainly a spin-off manga series from Index but Railgun actually has a light novel too. It was published as a canon side story divided into 8 parts and each part was sold with the first press limited editions of the Index Blu-ray/DVD volumes. If they’re not going ahead with the Sisters arc then they may go with that story because that story is already complete – it involves the 4 main girls spending time at an artificial island resort and theme park, a mysterious flying object goes berserk and stuff happens.
Then again, the timelime for that plot takes place after the Sister arc but eh… I guess it doesn’t matter much in terms of the TV series? :???:
That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I wouldn’t mind getting out of Academy city for awhile. I would however like more Touma Misaka interactions so I hope he shows up too.
w00t I can finally actually read this post, so here’s me giving you super late comments (yet) again =D
You hit the nail squarely on the head there about Misaka – she’s the rare kind of shounen-ish hero(ine) that I can really like. Aside from all the stuff you mentioned, I also liked it that she never felt the need to flaunt her powers or even make her full abilities clear at all, never getting remotely rattled by those typical “ah~ so that’s all a Level 5 can do” lines when she was fighting reservedly the whole time to avoid killing her opponent.
I actually recall seeing the word ‘bad-assery’ elsewhere so I should probably decline credit for the term :D But you’re dayamn right about Misaka being the epitome of bad-assery when she gets down to business.
Comments are always welcome. There is no window for talking about Anime here :3.
I definitely liked that. She’s the strong type or hero who needn’t use all she has in a fight. I want more Misaka and I want more anime. This dry spell has left me postless.
