Spring 2010 First Impressions (Part 1)
Are you feeling the Spring Atmosphere with my new Blog Banner?
I think that the best time to be an anime fan is during the first weekend of a new season. We get our first looks at what some of these animes are capable of and we’re thrown into new worlds with interesting new characters. Of course not every new anime makes me jump up and down with joy, but so far I’ve been fairly impressed order cheap pharm with what I’ve seen and I’m going to give some opening zithromax without prescription reviews (from the limited collection of new animes currently available).
Just like last season I will be giving them a 1-5 rating for comparison reasons (Mainly for how I view the first episodes of this season compared to previous seasons). I’m saving the best for last in this post so either wait patiently or scroll down for my top pick of the season (and I do intend to give the other animes ranking and reviews as they appear).
The five point scale is as follows:
1 = Facepalm, 2 = Yawn, 3 = Meh, 4 = Waku Waku, 5 = EPIC!!
B Gata H Kei = Yawn
Honestly it was more of a Facepalm, but it wasn’t really boring… It just doesn’t match my tastes. A girl (Yamada) trying to get 100 *ex friends is starting out by just trying to lose her *irginity to some random guy (Takashi Kosuda) she meets in a book store. The plot is a love comedy that will slowly progress into something semi-romantic. The story is unique and it sends a fairly offbeat message (girl trying to make *exual conquests). I also like that it shoots past the normal stereotype of girls being the shy ones. Unfortunately, this show makes her stereotypical in other ways a few minutes in. B Gata H Kei has the potential to say some pretty interesting stuff, but judging from the layout, I have a feeling it’s not going to. It will never progress further than a comedy for a certain type of audience and that’s a little sad. I also fear that since it probably won’t have any defendable points it’s just going to become another bad label on the people who watch anime (Especially with the recent CNN created Hentai-controversy. People are facepalming all over the internet and there are quite a few mangakas who are just outraged). I’ll probably drop this one after giving it one more episode to impress me.

Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama! = Meh
It wasn’t as bad as I thought :). Misaki Ayuzawa is your typical tsundere student council president that you can’t help admiring. She works extremely hard and has no time for a life. The first episode fleshed out all of my favorite parts of similar love comedies so that leaves me a little concerned for what else it can do, but I am a bit of a sucker for true Tsunderes. Takumi Usui, the male protagonist, is, of course, just a little smarter than Misaki, to her chagrin, and uses this to press home his infatuation of her. From the ED you get that he’s a pretty typical hero, dark and mysterious with a horrible past and just wants the little bit of happiness Misaki can bring. What can I say, if you like this type of story (Like Special A a bit) this one has a lot of promise for being pretty good within its rimonabant genre. It’s well executed and uses a lot of tried and true visual gags. It won’t do anything new or exciting, but if you just want to mindlessly giggle at your screen, this is the show for you.
Ichiban Ushiro no DaiMaou = Waku Waku
I’m embarrassed to admit how much I liked the opening episode of Ichiban Ushiro no DaiMaou. The characters really work and their lack of depth initially led to some really funny situations. The production company handled and represented their world to great effect and it doesn’t take itself seriously at all (always a good point for me). Akuto Sai is a fairly typical hero, but I really like how much the show makes fun of him: For instance when he was trying to help the grandmother up the stairs even though she clearly didn’t want him too. So far he’s been completely overmatched by every situation and can’t seem to get his foot in his mouth (which he desperately needs to do). It’s a harem comedy with the lead supposed to be the equivalent of what Ryuji (from Toradora) was initially made out to be. Hopefully they don’t drop the Devil King misunderstanding as fast as they dropped Ryuji’s Yakuza eyes in Toradora. I have minor complaints about the animations for running and the like, but I do like the close up character movement shaky cam. It’s pretty interesting and makes the characters feel more life-like. It is, however, ruined five seconds later when you see them fail at running.
Heroman = Facepalm
This show was made for a younger audience so my rating shouldn’t be all that surprising. Young cheap ampicilllin boy gets remote that allows him to control a powerful robot and save his would be girlfriend. It’s not horrible, but I’m a little too old to get much enjoyment from it.
Angel Beats! = EPIC!!
I was completely taken by surprise by Angel Beats! As you can tell from the rating I liked it a lot: I liked it so much there is now a post about the first episode here that goes in depth about why this anime should be on your list regardless of your anime preferences! (Lucky you, you get a double post today)
As always please feel free to leave comments with regard to your own tastes (or a comment to criticize my own XP (and be expecting another post as more first episodes come out)).
